Party Crashers

I step out of the Earth and shrug off the dust of my travel before setting down the box I’m carrying on a bar table.

“Tedz!” Rose rushes me like the crazy bitch she is and hugs me so hard my ribs complain. “Serious shit comin’,” she hisses in my ear under the pretense of giving me air-kisses.

I pat her back while I reach out with my Sixth Sense.

And slam straight into the hot, bitter, iron wall that’s my Da’s aura.

I nod at Rose, and she moves back so Sasha and Elliot can step in for hugs. Sasha’s usually a stone-cold bitch, but even she looks a little unnerved by my father’s presence.

“They just showed up,” Elliot whispers to me while he’s getting his hug.

“No worries,” I murmur, then step away from my crew to face the parental.

He and my older brother, Lez, are sitting at one of the bar’s booths. Sam, the bar’s owner, is standing a few feet away, thick-muscled arms crossed over her chest, lights gleaming on the shaved sides of her head and polished Docs peeping out of her cuffed dungies. Sam’s never had any time for my Da or my older brothers, which is why my crew hangs out at her bar. But it’s possible they have leverage on her.

I open the box I’ve brought and take out the smaller, cardboard box of stones for her, then hand the larger box to Elliot.

“Not so fast, girl,” Da says.

Elliot shoots me a worried glance.

I nod at him. “Those are all bought and paid for, nice and legal-like, so take ‘em away while I have a word with the parental.”

Elliot legs it out of the main bar like his ass is on fire. Lez starts to rise from his chair, but I walk towards the booth purposefully, cutting across Lez’s path. With a glance at Da, he sinks back into onto the padded bench.

Before I reach their table, I hold out the smaller box to Sam. “Here are the ones you asked for. Hope you like ‘em.”

“I always have. And I’ve always liked you and your crew, Teddy. You’re good kids. But I don’t want any trouble in my bar.”

“There won’t be,” I promise before I sink down into the booth across from my scowling parent and older brother.

“You wanted to see me, you coulda sent another email,” I say.

Because that’s how Da always communicates with his one and only daughter, by fucking email.

“Why make an extra trip when you were already coming over?” Da says through his teeth. He doesn’t look happy to see me, fancy that. He’s a big man: roughly carved of muscle going soft and big joints going arthritic. He tries to smooth his rough edges with haircuts that cost more than my fucking phone, teeth lasered a blinding white, and bespoke suits, but they sit ill on him. You can take the man out of Hattersley, but you can’t take Hattersley out of the man. He’ll always be a Council estate thug.

And I’ll always be the daughter of one.
